COLUMBIA — A city fire truck collided with a sport utility vehicle at Providence Road and Walnut Street on Thursday morning.
Columbia firefighters were responding to a call of a structure fire at 310 Garth Ave., according to a news release. The truck left Station 1 at 10th and Ash streets before turning southbound on Providence.

The release states the fire engine had its emergency lights and sirens on when it was struck by the vehicle. The emergency vehicle only suffered moderate damage but remains out of service. The SUV had significant damage.
According to the release, the SUV driver was evaluated by an emergency medical technician but refused treatment. No other injuries were reported.

Just another reason why we need more patrol officers writing tickets to the idiots on our city roadways and for judges to start imposing the maximum fines possible in all cases too.
Might also be a good time to look at doubling those fines to get the attention of these obvious idiots too.
If we can't afford more officers, would the proposed traffic cameras deter those drivers of limited intellectual capacity?
I'd imagine this is a case of distracted driving. Fire trucks and ambulances have to use ever more deafening horns and sirens because people use their electronics to tune out the outside world.
A car is a deadly weapon. Cars cause 70 times more accidental deaths than firearms. Drivers need to treat them with the respect they deserve, or they should not drive. It's that simple.
