COLUMBIA – The Hickman boys basketball team ended a two-game losing skid by getting a 50-35 win at home over Logan-Rogersville on Friday night.
Junior forward Jerald Hickem led the Kewpies with 18 points and senior guard Eric Franklin added 13.
A pair of seniors led the Wildcats, as forward Drew Dunton scored 14 and guard Brett Robb had 13.
Hickman got off to a quick start, taking a 12-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game.
“Coach told us before the game we gotta start out strong,” Hickem said. “We tried to come out strong and push the ball.”
As the game went on, Hickman slowed down the tempo, even holding the ball at half-court for minutes at a time in the third quarter.
“We wanted to get them outta that zone and match them up with us so we could start getting some penetration,” Hickman coach Ken Ash said.
Logan-Rogersville kept the score close the whole game, trailing 36-30 heading into the final quarter.
But in the fourth, Hickman took over, outscoring the Wildcats 14-5.
Hickem was a big part of that, scoring 10 of his 18 points in the second half.
“I think he saw opportunities that he let go by in the first half, but he stepped up and hit them in the second half,” Ash said.
After the game Ash said his players had more to battle against than just a tough opponent, saying sickness is still a problem in the locker room.
“I had kids throwing up before the game,” Ash said.
Internal team issues didn’t help matters either.
“Our bench is short tonight because we had discipline problems,” Ash said.
After the game Hickman’s Court Warming dance was ready to begin, but the players didn’t seem to be up for any dancing.
Hickem said he was ready to get home, go to sleep and get healthy.
The Kewpies will have almost a week to get better before they have to travel to Jefferson City on Thursday for their next game.
