COLUMBIA — A Hallsville man accused of fatally shooting his former brother-in-law pleaded not guilty a second time to charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action Monday in Boone County Circuit Court.
William P. Clinch, 38, originally pleaded not guilty to the same charges in December 2007 and was set to be tried Jan. 27 before Boone County Circuit Judge Gene Hamilton. But Boone County Prosecutor Dan Knight dropped the charges the day of the trial. He re-filed them later that day.
Knight said he dismissed the case because he thought Hamilton's ruling on a pre-trial motion would have let the jury interpret Missouri’s self-defense statute too broadly, according to previous Missourian reports.
Clinch is accused of fatally shooting his former brother-in-law, Jeremy Bohannon, 32, in the parking lot of a McDonald’s restaurant on Clark Lane in 2007.
Clinch's trial date will be set on Feb. 16.
