PrintCOLUMBIA — Police had little to say Monday morning about their investigation of a fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man in northeast Columbia overnight.
Columbia Police Capt. Stephen Monticelli said he was not able to discuss any potential leads and would not say if the person suspected of fatally shooting Ronald Cornell Brown was still at large.
At about 12:40 a.m., police found Brown with a gunshot wound to the upper leg in the side parking lot of Ballenger Liquor and C Store after receiving multiple reports of shots fired from nearby residents, Monticelli said.
Brown was then transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Monticelli said he didn't know where Brown lived.
Monticelli said that investigators found bullet casings at the scene of the shooting, but the caliber of the weapon had not yet been determined.
As of 9:25 a.m., investigators were still collecting evidence from the scene, and Monticelli would not say whether any suspects had been arrested in connection with the shooting.

The violence that continues in the Northeast part of Columbia is nothing new. I recently moved off of McKee St. where I lived with my family for 2 years and we left because of how terrible the neighborhood and adjoining neighborhoods (Indian Hills) were. It has become a haven for trash, it was obvious that most of these families didn’t care about where and what their teenagers were out doing. They caught a murderer of Cynthia White right next door to where I was living, that was enough to get out.
But my story is this…one day my family decided to go on a bike ride down McKee St. and left on Rice Rd.; about ½ mile from our home my daughter got a flat tire, so I turned around to go get my automobile and left her with her father to wait for my return. On my way back home I passed the empty lot at the end of McKee and Rice Rd. (which was filled with male black juveniles about 7 of them). As I was navigating past them and around the corner the little jerks decided to throw their football at me (just about head level), fortunately they missed me by about 1.5 feet. If they had hit me I would have been knocked off of my bicycle and sustained moderate injuries. They tried to assult me and inflict damage with a football. After that I realized that the parents of these kids didn’t give a s**t about what they were doing or trying to hurt. We moved away and now live in a neighborhood that is very pleasant, and the neighbors actually look out for your home. So I’m not surprised that the violence is continuing in the Northeast part of town, it has been building for at least 2 years and the cops can’t seem to do anything about it. In fact there has been so much violence on that side of town that the CPD should assign a special task force just to get a hand on who is living out there and who is creating all of this trouble.
