ST. LOUIS — Another Asian elephant at the St. Louis Zoo tested positive for herpes. Maliah, the zoo's 2 1/2 year-old calf, showed a faint positive response for the virus.
So far she has shown no clinical signs of the disease and her blood is normal.
Test results on the zoo's other six adult elephants are pending.
Meanwhile, another elephant, Jade, remains in stable condition, and her behavior and appetite have returned to normal.
The nearly 2-year-old Asian pachyderm fell ill last week with a type of herpes that hits only elephants and seems to target the young. It can cause extensive bleeding.
Jade has been placed on anti-viral medication.
