PrintEverything that went right for the Missouri baseball team in a decisive win over Nevada on Friday night went wrong it its 9-3 loss to Gonzaga on Saturday afternoon in Phoenix.
At the plate against Nevada, the Tigers drew 15 walks and had nine hits. On Saturday, Mizzou didn't get its first hit until the fourth inning and didn't score until the sixth inning.
"We didn't take very good batting practice," Tigers coach Tim Jamieson said in a radio interview. "That carried over to the game."
The Tigers (1-1) struggles at the plate also had something to do with the starting pitcher for Gonzaga (1-1), Cody Martin. Last year, Martin was named to the Roger Clemens Award watch list, an award that Mizzou pitcher Aaron Crow went on to win.
On Friday night, senior Kyle Gibson struck out six batters in six innings and didn't allow an earned run. On Saturday, senior Ian Berger allowed seven runs in five innings. Berger also committed two errors that led to Gonzaga runs.
"He made a couple of defensive mistakes that cost himself," Jamieson said. "He's got to do better than that."
The Grand Canyon Classic concludes Sunday with Missouri playing a double header. The first game against Nevada starts at 11 a.m. and the second game against Gonzaga starts at 3 p.m.
