COLUMBIA — Stephens College Children’s School, which provides preschool, elementary and extended day programs, is holding an open house on March 6.

The open house will give visitors a chance to tour the school, observe students and teachers at work and ask any questions, according to the Stephens College Web site.

“It’s our recruitment,” said Leslie Willey, director of the Children's School. “Our registration is open, and we are seeking enrollments for next year.”

The Web site describes the school as a “constructivist, holistic-based laboratory school community” in which the children are not only taught by knowledgeable and certified teachers but also Stephens College education majors.

“In each of the classrooms we have one certified teacher with a master’s degree. Our students with education majors work in the classrooms, observing and interacting,” Willey said. “As sophomores, they are planning lessons and teaching; as juniors, they work up to two days a week; and as seniors they are working at least two days a week.”

Willey said aside from the open house, parents and anyone else can drop in at any time or call and make an appointment.

The school opened its preschool program in 1925 and its elementary program in 1971.
