COLUMBIA — Tuesday night, Missouri men’s basketball coach Mike Anderson and his wife Marcheita will find a seat at Mizzou Arena for the Missouri women’s basketball game.
That in itself is not uncommon. But what will be unusual is that this time the Andersons will be rooting against the Tigers.
That’s because the Tigers will be playing No. 16-ranked Texas. And the freshman guard wearing the No. 12 Longhorns jersey is former Hickman standout Yvonne Anderson, the Andersons' daughter.
Mike Anderson said he was able to make a trip down to Austin earlier this season to see his daughter play but is excited to see her back in Missouri.
“Anytime you get a chance to see your child play, that’s a good thing,” Anderson said. “So I’m looking forward to it. They’re coming in tonight, and I think Mama’s (Marcheita Anderson) going to have a meal for them at the house,” Mike Anderson said. “So it’ll be good. I think she’s looking forward to it, and I’m certain that my wife and I are looking forward to it.”
While at Hickman, Yvonne Anderson was named to the Missouri All-State team twice and was also selected as the all-area MVP two times. Before moving to Columbia she was named the 2006 Alabama state 6A player of the year as a sophomore at Hoover High School.
She has been earning solid minutes at Texas. She plays nearly 17 minutes per game off the bench and has played in all 26 of the Longhorns’ games. She is also averaging 5.5 points on efficient 46-percent shooting.
The Longhorns are tied with Iowa State for fifth place in the Big 12 Conference at 7-5. They were ranked as high as No. 4 in the AP Top 25 after starting the season 11-0, but slipped in the rankings after losing consecutive games against unranked Purdue and Texas Tech. They come to Columbia on a two-game losing streak after losing to Oklahoma State last week and to No. 12-ranked Texas A&M over the weekend in College Station.
To some, it might seem like Mike Anderson is in an awkward position, with his daughter playing against the school that employs him. But he insists there’s no conflict of interest when it comes to who he will be cheering for.
“Well I’m her dad,” Anderson said. “And you got to root for your kid before anything else, and I’m rooting for our kid.”
