PrintCOLUMBIA — A new draft of a territorial fire service agreement — given preliminary approval by the city and the Boone County Fire Protection District — could save the city an estimated $4.3 million over the next five years.
The proposed draft would pay the fire district a lump sum of $350,000 annually until 2013. The draft is a departure from the old agreement that based compensation on assessed property values of land annexed by the city from 1994 through Jan. 31, 2009. The agreement was extended until March 31 to allow for a new agreement to be finalized.

City Manager Bill Watkins, members of the Boone County Fire Protection District and the Columbia Fire Department agreed on the terms of the final draft of the agreement which will be introduced at Monday evening's City Council meeting.
Both sides came to a general consensus quickly and said they were happy with the terms of the proposed draft — the meeting lasted 10 minutes.
"We're giving you a good deal," Boone County Fire Protection District Board Member Dave Griggs said at the meeting.
"It's a good deal for both of us," Watkins said.
