Missouri House approves tax break for saw mills

JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri House gives preliminary approval to a tax break for saw mills.

The legislation would classify saw and planing mills as agriculture and horticultural land, instead of commercial property. Supporters say changing the zoning could drop the local tax rate the mills pay from 32 percent to 12 percent.

House sponsor David Day, a Republican from Dixon, said Tuesday that laborers in the timber industry work hard and need a little help. Another supporter contends that the mills are similar to a farm because timber is a renewable resource that is harvested.

The bill was approved 157-4 and needs another vote to move to the Senate.

The state Legislature also is considering a series of other business tax incentives backed by Gov. Jay Nixon that are designed to spur Missouri's economy.
