PrintCOLUMBIA — Local talent will be on display at a Hip Hop Talent Show from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in honor of Black History Month. The community division of the city's Parks and Recreation Department is organizing the event at the Frederick Douglass High School gym.
Bill Thompson of the Parks and Recreation Department said the talent show “ties into the whole concept of what black history is all about. A lot of young people can relate to it, too.”
Thompson said he believes the impact of music and spirit has always been at the center of black culture.
Similar hip-hop shows have been done in the past to highlight musical culture. This year, an anonymous judging panel will decide first-, second- and third-place winners. Those who receive awards at the end of the night will receive a certificate and a gift card. Individuals and groups will perform about 10 acts. The event is free and open to the public.
“I expect it will bring in a lot of parents and young people,” Thompson said.
