COLUMBIA — Early Wednesday morning, a man driving the wrong way on Interstate 70 collided head-on with a semitrailer truck near a construction zone, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department. No one was injured in the accident, and officers determined the driver, 21-year-old Dwayne. D. McGinnis of Columbia, was intoxicated at the time.
At 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, a 911 call reported a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-70 near Stadium Boulevard, the release said. Shortly after, the police department was notified of an accident at the 124.7 mile marker on I-70.
At the scene, officers found that a car driven by McGinnis had struck a semi, driven by 46-year-old Curtis Ekstrom of Independence, near the site of a construction zone, according to the release. Five construction workers were in close proximity to the vehicles when the accident occurred. All parties involved refused medical attention.
McGinnis appeared to be intoxicated, the release said. He was arrested on suspicion of five counts of attempted second-degree assault for operating an automobile while intoxicated.
As of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, McGinnis was still in custody at the Boone County Jail with a bond set at $22,500.
