PrintCOLUMBIA — Columbia grocery stores were not affected by the recall of three brands of North Star Co. bagged potatoes that were suspected of listeria bacteria contamination, according to a news release from the company.
The recalled brands are Simply Potatoes, Diner's Choice and Farm Fresh, according to the release.
The recall affects several grocery store chains across the country, including Walmart and Kroger, the company responsible for supplying Gerbes.
Employees at the Walmart at 405 E. Nifong Blvd. said they did not stock the potatoes in question. Employees at the Walmart stores at 3001 W. Broadway and at 415 Conley Road declined to comment. But none of the recalled products were on their shelves.
Employees at Gerbes at 205 E. Nifong Blvd. said they were not authorized to comment about possible recalls. But they also did not carry the recalled products.
Listeria is the cause of listeriosis, an infection that mainly affects pregnant women, newborns, older citizens and people with weak immune systems, the release stated. Symptoms of listeriosis are fever, nausea and severe headache. The bacteria rarely affects healthy individuals.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the suspected contamination.
Customers can return their potatoes to the place of purchase for a refund or replacement.

I bought a bag of the "Simply Potatoes" hash browns from Schnucks on Sunday. So, has anyone looked into whether Schnucks has been selling the potatoes with the specific "use-by" dates they're recalling?
