Missouri House committee considers early voting

JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri voters could cast ballots three weeks in advance under a proposal being considered by a House committee.

The legislation would allow for two weeks of early voting during federal elections, with a weeklong break before Election Day. Polls would be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and until noon on Saturdays.

Supporters say early voting is more convenient for busy voters, who simply might decide not to vote.

Critics of the bill dispute the bill's estimated yearly cost of about $200,000. They say many rural counties would want additional early voting sites, driving up the state's obligation.

The House Elections Committee heard testimony on the bill Tuesday but did not take a vote.
