COLUMBIA — Columbia College is opening a new campus at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.

The new campus will offer associate and bachelor's degrees in general studies. Free child care will also be offered for military dependents during class as long as funding is available, a news release stated. The campus specifically serves military personnel and other working adults, according to its Web site.

Lunch-hour classes for Marines, the Coast Guard, sailors and airmen begin March 26, but courses may eventually be expanded beyond the lunch hour.

"That decision will be made in the future in coordination between the leaders of the college and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot," said Gary Oedewaldt, assistant dean for adult higher education.

"It will be based on student demand, the needs of the installation and the availability of the resources that would be needed to offer classes at other times."

An open house will be held March 23, co-hosted by Gerald Brouder, president of Columbia College, and Brig. Gen. A. Salinas, the commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. According to Oedewaldt, representatives from the staff and units of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot will be on hand to greet the students in their first class.
