How should we remedy the trash problem on East Campus?

A story in Wednesday's Missourian brought up a trash problem in East Campus. The neighborhood is populated with many college students, who have been placing trash out a few days too early.

The city institutes a fine of $25 for the first offense and $45 for continued offenses. Richard Weiman, manager of the city’s Solid Waste Utility, said the charges didn't seem to act as a deterrant.

East Campus resident and MU student Morgan Merrifield said she didn't think raising the charge would have any effect, though she has been fined for placing trash out early before.

"Raising the price wouldn’t help, because it's not like it’s intentional," Merrifield said.

If there is a complaint about the trash, the city will send a crew for special pickup,which costs more to the city than the fine recoups .

Second Ward Councilman Chris Janku proposed moving up trash day for East Campus from Wednesday to Monday.
