After similar drill, St. Louis firefighters rescue man from sewer

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis City firefighters say they put a rescue drill to good use this week.

On Thursday, they rescued a man who fell 8 feet through a sewer manhole in St. Louis.

Firefighters said the 46-year-old man stepped on a cast iron sewer plate that gave way.

The damaged plate could be seen at the bottom of the shaft. Emergency crews reported the man was conscious when they arrived. He was rushed to a hospital.

Captain Todd Gooch said the "Collapse Rescue Task Force" had just practiced a similar rescue Thursday morning.

Gooch doesn't know why he had an urge to practice this type of rescue, but thinks it helped get the man out quickly and safely.
