Missouri Senate votes to back restrictions on traffic cameras

JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri senators have backed new restrictions on the use of cameras to ticket motorists who run red lights.

The Senate approved an amendment Tuesday requiring police to positively identify the drivers of vehicles caught on camera running a red light before issuing a ticket.

The amendment was attached to a broader transportation bill that now awaits a vote.

About 30 Missouri cities use cameras to enforce traffic signals.

Republican Sen. Jim Lembke of St. Louis offered the amendment. Lembke said the red-light cameras trample citizens' constitutional rights.

Democratic Sen. Rita Days, of St. Louis, countered that the cameras help save lives by encouraging people to stop at red lights.
