High winds, fallen power line cause brush fires in Boone County

COLUMBIA — Shortly before 2 p.m. Monday, five units from the Boone County Fire Protection District responded to reports of a brush fire in the area of Santog Drive and Dometrorch Road, according to Gale Blomenkamp, Fire Protection District division chief.

The fire was reported by a passerby driving on I-70. Ten firefighters took part in extinguishing the fire. Blomenkamp said the fire was started by a power line falling over and igniting nearby brush.

An acre of brush was burnt. There were no structures damaged by the fire and no injuries.

A second, unrelated fire was reported later Monday afternoon, at 3:17 p.m on Tomlin Hill Road. Blomenkamp said the fire was caused by a controlled burn that got out of hand because of 30 mph winds in the area.

Twenty firefighters were involved in fighting the fire, including one unit from the Southern Boone County Fire Protection District. Blomenkamp said there was one structure threatened by the fire, but there were no damages or injuries. Ten acres of brush were burnt.
