LETTER: Community will be hurt without Health Connection

Thursday, April 2, 2009 | 11:25 a.m. CDT

As you know, MU is planning to close The Health Connection on June 30. I have been a member since it opened 19 years ago.

I have participated in five arthritis research programs through the years and benefited from all of them. The Health Connection is a vital resource for me in my on-going endeavor to maintain my strength, flexibility, fitness and overall health.

In addition to my physical health, the gym has also contributed to my emotional health. I am 73-years-old, and along with most of the other members, have reached the age where it is difficult to feel that we matter, especially in a fitness facility. The members know each other, and it is almost like a family. The staff also knows each and every member and oversees our well-being when we are in the gym. This is a very important establishment to our community and senior citizens. We would be willing to accept restricted hours and higher fees if we could continue to use the gym that has become so important in our lives.
