Katie LaRue notched a late goal to give Hickman the 1-0 win and move the team to 4-1 on the season.

COLUMBIA — With precious time ticking away, the entire Hickman girl’s soccer team rushed to midfield and jumped up and down together in a team hug.

Junior Katie LaRue had just scored her first goal of the season, and the only goal of the night for the lady Kewpies. LaRue’s goal led to a 1-0 win over Moberly and improved the record of the Hickman girl’s soccer team to 4-1.

LaRue, who has been playing for the Kewpies varsity team since halfway through her freshman year, had only one thing to say about her game-winning goal. “It felt indescribable,” LaRue said.

While LaRue was too overwhelmed to express her feelings, head soccer coach Tony Gragnani was able to describe how the lone goal of the night made him feel.

“I was more nervous after the goal than before,” smiled Gragnani, “I knew that Moberly wouldn’t give up.”

Gragnani said the reason for the late scoring game was partly the result of effectively caring out its game plan. Gragnani said that his team is focused on improving its connecting passes from his midfielders to his forwards.

But Gragnani knows that this will take time and spent more time lavishing praise on his team’s performance Friday night.

“It was a great soccer game,”  he said, “Moberly played awesome and it was a game you love to win and hate to lose.”

The Kewpies will play again at home at 11:30 a.m. againsts Lee’s Summit West.
