COLUMBIA — A fire extensively damaged a northeast Columbia duplex Monday morning.
The fire at 2413 Creeks Edge Court left one side of the two-story rental house scorched after flames spread from the garage up the front of the property. The other side of the duplex, 2415 Creeks Edge Court, suffered minor smoke damage, according to the Columbia Fire Department news release. No one was injured.
- The left side of the two-story duplex on Creeks Edge Court was scorched, and the other side suffered minor smoke damage. None of the residents were injured in the fire.
- Three engines responded to a call at Creeks Edge Court, when the garage of the two-story duplex caught fire. A neighbor's visitor saw and alerted the tenants.
Both occupants were able to escape. One was checked by emergency medical technicians but did not report any injuries.
Damage to the duplex and its contents is estimated at $30,000, according to the release.
Three Columbia Fire Department engines, one Columbia Fire Department rescue squad vehicle and one Boone Hospital Center ambulance responded to the fire after receiving a call at 11:42 a.m. from Eric Brockman, a visitor staying at a neighbor's house.
Brockman said he saw flames in the open garage in the back corner. He then notified the occupants of both sides of the duplex and tried to put the flames out with garden hoses from surrounding homes.
Firefighters were able to control the fire in about 20 minutes, according to the news release.
Columbia Fire Department investigators confirmed that the fire began in the garage but because of the damage and the number of items stored in the garage, they were unable to pinpoint an exact cause, according to the release.
