PrintCOLUMBIA — The Rock Bridge girls’ soccer team bounced back from its slow season start with a dominant 2-0 win over Hannibal on Tuesday evening at Rock Bridge.
With nearly 13 minutes left in the first half, senior Gabe Dobbins nailed a short left-footed kick into the Pirates' goal for the Bruins’ first score this season.
“It just gives me hope that in the future I can make a contribution with other goals,” Dobbins said. “It was kind of cool to be the first one to get a goal this season.”
Rock Bridge fed off of Dobbins’ score.
“It was kind of the ice-breaker for the season,” Dobbins said, “just to know that we could get it in the back of the net.”
“At half time I asked them how our first goal of the season felt,” Bruins coach Kelly Gates said. “They were all excited and it was beautiful. We talked about some things we could improve on and they went out the second half and did it.”
The Bruins (1-2-0) controlled the game at the start of the second half, and with less than three minutes off the clock, senior Kelsey Eckenrode scored the Bruins’ second goal against Hannibal (3-5-0).
Gates said Eckenrode, a four-year varsity starter, is an advantage for Rock Bridge.
“She’s been a part of the program since freshman year and has really developed over the years,” Gates said.
Gates said she hopes the energy from Tuesday’s win will translate into success in upcoming games.
“We know what it feels like to win now,” Gates said. “Hopefully that excitement will lead into tomorrow.”
The Bruins will host Helias at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
