UPDATE: Humane Society among 10 finalists for Zootoo makeover

Wednesday, April 8, 2009 | 1:35 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — The Central Missouri Humane Society is one of 10 finalists in a million-dollar makeover contest run by Zootoo.com. The finalists were announced Tuesday at the Humane Society of the United States' Animal Care Expo in Las Vegas.

The Central Missouri Humane Society will now advance to the third phase of the contest, where the public votes for the finalist they feel best deserves the makeover. Voting begins Monday and will continue through April 19. All registered users at Zootoo.com who have uploaded a profile picture are permitted to vote for their choice up to 10 times per day.

When the Humane Society was first entered into the contest in January, it was ranked 859, but thanks in part to the efforts of two Columbia Catholic School students — Libby Burks and Amanda Huhman — the Humane Society rose up the ranks and was ranked No. 1 during the first phase.

The girls, who aren't able to vote because of the requirement that voters be 18, have sold t-shirts, declared March 13 "Going Blue for Zootoo Day" and created Web site to support the cause.

According to Zootoo.com, the finalist with the most votes will be announced on or near April 27. To vote, register as a member and visit the voting section of the site.
