PrintCOLUMBIA — The Missouri Bradford Research and Extension Center will hold its third annual native plant sale Saturday.
Plant sales will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be provided by local vendors Missouri Wildflowers, Hamilton Native Plants, the Native Plant Society and Prairie Hill Farm. Prices will vary based on the size of the plant but should average around four dollars, center director Tim Reinbott said.
Demonstrations on how to best plant, grow and maintain shrubs, trees and other landscaping plant varieties native to Missouri and the locality will be given at 11 a.m. by Nadia Navarrete-Tindall, native plant specialist at Lincoln University, and noon by Elizabeth Hamilton of Hamilton Native Plants. The sessions will be roughly 30 minutes long.
"Native plants are very well adapted to our conditions and are designed to take our kind of extremes," Reinbott said. "You're not forcing them to grow in what they're not adapted to." This allows the native plants to be easily incorporated into existing landscapes.
The event additionally runs a bird-watching tour beginning at 7 a.m. The tour is free and those interested should RSVP by calling 884-7945. At least 40 species of birds are expected to be in the area.
