PrintCOLUMBIA — The Central Missouri Area Agency on Aging is accepting statements of intent from people interested in serving on the regional-level of the Silver-Haired Legislature, a statewide advocacy group for seniors.
Boone County residents chosen will represent and advocate for the needs of mid-Missouri seniors.
“The Silver-Haired Legislature … is a formally elected body of citizens 60 years of age and older that promotes conscientious legislative advocacy for Missouri’s older adults,” according to the Web site of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior services Web site.
Jean Leonatti, chief executive officer of the CMAAA, said that in the past the Silver-Haired Legislature has lobbied for funding for meal plans, for payday loan reform and for better nursing home care. The group each year agrees on a list of five top priorities affecting senior citizens and lobbies for state legislation.
Those chosen for the two-year senator and representative positions will be asked to determine the interests of seniors in the area and will relay that information to the larger Silver-Haired network.
Those interested in applying can pick up candidate forms at the Oakland Senior Center at 805 N. Old 63 in Columbia or at the Centralia Senior Center at 211 W. Burton St. in Centralia.
The deadline for statements of intent is May 1. Elections are May 19.
