PrintCOLUMBIA — The recently recovered Sturgeon Court of Common Pleas documents will become part of a statewide effort to preserve historical judicial records and make them easily accessible to citizens, scholars and students.
Once they are organized and put onto microfilm by volunteers and state archivists, a process that might take a year or more, the documents will join tens of thousands of court documents from across the state in the Missouri State Archives.
Online databases include detailed references to actual Missouri judicial records for courts of common pleas, courts of quarter sessions, from selected counties, Missouri Supreme Court case files and myriad judicial records from St. Louis dating back to French and Spanish rule. References to case files from the Boone County Circuit Court from 1815 to 1833 are also available online.
The archives include 80,000 rolls of microfilm and 40,000 cubic feet of original local government records dating to 1770, according to the Missourian. They contain family records, voting records, court records and thousands of other documents from across the state.
Created in 1965, the Missouri State Archives is supported by federal and state funding and grants, said Mark M. Carroll, an MU professor. Carroll serves on the Missouri State Archives St. Louis Circuit Court Advisory Board.
