Today's Question: Solving the East Campus trash problem for good

Since the Missourian first reported on the problem of East Campus residents placing their trash on the curb days ahead of its Wednesday pick-up, there have been plenty of ideas about how to remedy the situation.

At the time, city staff members wanted to raise the fine for putting out trash early because the current $25 fine for first offenders and $45 fine for subsequent offenses within a year is not a sufficient deterrent.

Readers at ColumbiaMissourian.com wondered if the use of trash cans might be the answer or if the apathy was the real reason behind the problem, making it more difficult to solve.

Recognizing that most people who put their trash out early are college students with excess trash from weekend parties, Second Ward Councilman Chris Janku offered the simple idea of moving the trash pick-up to Monday to cut down on the time between the parties and the trash collection.

It appears that the city staff now agrees with Janku since City Manager Bill Watkins proposed the change at the most recent City Council meeting.

If the change were to be made, though, residents would have to wait until 4 p.m. on Sunday to put out their trash. .
