ST. LOUIS — An alderwoman in St. Louis wants to ban smoking in all restaurants and businesses.
Lyda Krewson says she hopes the bill she plans to introduce will at least get dialogue started in the city. She wants the St. Louis smoking ban to happen in conjunction with similar bans proposed in St. Louis County and in St. Charles.
Many business owners say they're against the proposal. They worry the ban would hurt business. But some who already have voluntary smoking restrictions support it.
Krewson says her goal is to protect workers from second-hand smoke.

This indoor air pollution kills 1,100 (non-smoking) Missouri people every year. This averages 3 people a week in St. Louis County. Can you think of any other pollution that that even comes close to this?
Should Business Owners be allowed to decide to continue generating this pollution if they want to? I think not. Business Owners have a responsibility to provide a healthy place in which to work. If they decide to keep the pollution, they are putting the health of their employees second. I have never heard a good argument for putting the health of employees second - have you??
Are we in feudal Europe where restaurant employees are serfs forbidden to leave their lords' lands, or can they take a different job if they so desire?
("Krewson says her goal is to protect workers from second-hand smoke.")
Admirable goal. Considering that there are other laws, rules and regulations concerning the work environment, aside from "private property" issues, I see no problem with protecting those who have little chance of becoming anything other than a "serf."
I see this more as a quality of life issue and less of an employer's rights issue.
Serfs Up Dude!
A person goes to a business to see about a job. When they walk in they see people smoking, now they have a choice do i want to work here or not? When did the owner of a business lose HIS right to run HIS business the way he sees fit? If you dont like the way a person runs his business DONT go there & please dont apply for a job & make life hell for both of you.I know, I know you have rights but so does the next guy!
Smoking should be banned in all public buildings of business oriented practices with in all city limits across our nation.
