Humane Society gets custody of 102 dogs from alleged puppy mill

ST. LOUIS — A judge has granted custody of 102 dogs taken from an alleged Daviess County puppy mill to the Humane Society of Missouri.

A Jackson County judge made the ruling Thursday. The dogs are at the Humane Society in St. Louis, and some will be put up for adoption next week. Those interested in adopting are encouraged to visit the Humane Society Web site, hsmo.org.

On March 31, authorities went to a northwest Missouri home near Winston, after reports of up to 200 dogs and three primates at the property.

By the time they arrived, most of the animals had been removed. But 102 of the dogs were eventually turned in to authorities. The Humane Society originally reported 92 had been found. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recovered the three primates.
