KANSAS CITY — Severe thunderstorms spawned at least one tornado that damaged rural homes and structures, and sent race fans fleeing from the Kansas Speedway.

The tornado touched down in southern Leavenworth County, northwest of Linwood. Leavenworth County emergency management reported barns were destroyed and some homes were severely damaged, with some cars flipped over.

The storms also prompted Kansas Speedway to suspend the NASCAR truck race until Monday. The race completed 52 laps before heavy storms moved into the area.

Tornado sirens went off about 30 minutes after the race was suspended. Fans had already begun streaming out of the track, while others went for cover at the track. Crews from many of the truck teams gathered in the media workroom at the track trying to get information on the storm.
