Energy Department awards $35 million to St. Louis researchers

ST. LOUIS  — Researchers at two St. Louis institutions will get a combined $35 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Energy for research into finding energy sources through plants, algae and photosynthesis.

The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and Washington University are getting two of 46 grants awarded nationwide to establish Energy Frontier Research Centers. President Barack Obama announced the grants Monday.

The Danforth Center will receive $15 million to establish a Center for Advanced Biofuels Systems. Washington University will get $20 million to establish the Photosynthetic Antenna Research Center and study forms of energy based on the principles of light harvesting and energy funneling.

The grants are funded over a five-year period.
