CENTER — Two people are recovering after being rescued after their car became stranded in a flash flood in northeast Missouri.
The rescue happened Thursday evening near Center, about 20 miles southwest of Hannibal.
Hannibal firefighters arrived to find the car on a bridge, surrounded by water for several hundred yards and with a strong current. Fire Chief Tim Carter said the water was too shallow for a rescue boat, so a crew drove a fire truck into the water to get closer.
By the time firefighters got to the car, water was to the seats.
The people in the car, Robert Fohey of Palmyra and Mildred Chaney of Shelbina, were cold but declined medical treatment.
Flash flooding closed several northeast Missouri roads on Thursday.
