COLUMBIA — Canoeists and kayakers paddled for charity on Sunday at Stephens Lake to support Rainbow House, a children's emergency shelter. The day was sponsored by the Alpine Shop and included members of Columbia Paddling Enthusiasts.

Alpine Shop manager Brennan VanMatre said the event was open to everyone, but he hoped it would inspire families to share outdoor activities together.

"We wanted to have an event that brought out the family, not just one or two people in a family," he said.

He estimated 75 to 100 people came, given the good weather.

The paddle party was free but donations to Rainbow House were encouraged.

"We wanted to make sure," VanMatre said, "that kids in the community who need helping hands will have that."
