PrintCOLUMBIA — The Rock Bridge girls soccer team is no stranger to 1-0 games this season.
Before Monday, Rock Bridge had played in five games that had one goal this season, coming came out on the losing side in four of them. The Bruins reversed that trend on Monday against Smith-Cotton, winning 1-0 to improve to 6-11. The Bruins' other 1-0 win came against Hickman.
Coach Marc VanDover said his team needed the victory.
“The whole team has stepped up their play,” VanDover said. “Even if we come up on the wrong end of games, we take something away from every game that we’ve played. Our goal is to get as best as we can for districts.”
The goal came early in the second half. Freshman Carmen Boessen found junior Kelsey Reimler, who got just enough leg on the ball to place it in the goal.
Earlier in the game, the referees called a ball that was near the goal line a non-goal.
"We were all just like we aren’t going to have any doubt on the next one," Reimler said, "we’re just going to put it in.”
The goal was Reimler’s first of the season.
“I’ve had so many that have been this close this season,” Reimler said. “It always seems like the goalie tries to make the really good save whenever I’m shooting. It was really good to just get in there, especially in a game like this where it’s 1-0. We’ve been on the other end of 1-0’s plenty of times this season, so it feels really great to be on the winning side of one of those.”
In the final minutes of the game, Smith-Cotton had a chance at tying the game, getting past the Bruins’ defenders for a clear shot on net. Sophomore goalie Carrie Levy made the save off her shoulder and secured the victory for Rock Bridge.
"It was basically fate that we won by that and I made that save," Levy said. "There was no way. It would not have been fair if we would’ve lost.”
The Bruins play next Wednesday against Hickman at Rock Bridge.
