JEFFERSON CITY — Tenants living in foreclosed rental properties would get 10 business days' warning before being evicted, under legislation heading to the governor.
The Missouri House voted 160-0 on Tuesday to give the bill final approval.
While the national recession has increased the number of foreclosures, the treatment of renters living in those properties is a growing issue.
The Missouri legislation would require the new owners of foreclosed properties to notify existing tenants in writing of the new situation. The letter would have to state the property was in foreclosure and that the new owner could evict the tenants after 10 business days without a new lease. It also would have to include the new owners' name, address and phone number.
