COLUMBIA – Missouri has another golfer who will be competing in NCAA regional competition.
Tigers men’s golfer Peter Malnati earned an individual bid to play in a regional tournament from May 14 to 16 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., one of six regionals used as qualifers to the NCAA tournament. Women's golfer Julia Potter was selected as an individual to compete in regional play last week.
“He played really good in the fall and that was good enough, even with a lackluster spring, to get him in,” Missouri men's golf coach Mark Leroux said.
Leroux said that Malnati, a senior, picked up his play at the end of the season, pointing to his third round at the Big 12 Conference Championships as a sign of what Malnati can do.
“Hopefully he’s kind of coming back to form,” Leroux said.
Malnati and Leroux will travel to Oklahoma next Tuesday so Malnati can get in a practice round before the competition. That will be important, because Malnati has never played on the course.
Malnati will be competing against 13 teams and nine other individuals in his region. With a new format this year, the top five teams will advance to the NCAA tournament along with the best individual not on one of those five teams.
