JEFFERSON CITY — An extension of a 50-cent fee for new tires sold in Missouri is headed to the governor.
The state House passed the bill 149-5 on Tuesday.
The tire fee is set to expire in January, and the legislation would extend it to 2015. The fee was created in 1990 to help the Department of Natural Resources clean up illegal tire dumps. More than 15 million scrap tires have been picked up.
The legislation lets the department spend half of the tire fee on picking up illegal tire dumps instead of the current limit of one-quarter of the money.
