KANSAS CITY — Kansas City police are investigating why officers failed to file a report in the apparent hit-and-run last month of a homeless man.
Thomas Wasmer IV died Friday, apparently succumbing to injuries from the April 26 incident.
A reporter with The Kansas City Star saw a notice about the death in a church bulletin and asked police about the investigation.
Police said they couldn't find one. Police Sgt. Bill Mahoney reviewed 911 calls and ambulance records and found a note about the accident. But the responding officers never filed a police report or referred the case to the department's vehicular crimes section.
An autopsy on the 39-year-old Wasmer's body was scheduled for Saturday and a full investigation is planned.
