COLUMBIA — A federal judge has dismissed an intellectual property lawsuit filed by the University of Missouri System against an award-winning MU professor.
The university says that Galen Suppes, a chemical engineering professor, sought federal patents without crediting the university and failed to share profits from his inventions.
The U.S. District Court in Kansas City rejected the school's legal claim in late April, ruling that federal patent law does not apply in the case. The university then filed a similar lawsuit in Boone County Circuit Court on the same day the federal suit was dismissed.
Suppes has said he sought legal ownership of his inventions only after the university failed to recognize and pursue the commercial prospects for his research.
