COLUMBIA — A pan of cooking oil left unattended caused a fire Friday that damaged a Columbia apartment building, fire officials say.

The Columbia Fire Department responded to a call about 7:20 p.m. of a reported fire on the fifth floor of Paquin Tower , 1201 Paquin St.

Crews discovered light smoke on the fifth floor and the automatic fire sprinkler system operating in one of the apartments, said Capt. Eric Hartman in a news release.

The occupant was not home at the time of the fire. He told officials he had placed a pan of cooking oil on the stove, turned on the burners and left to run an errand, Hartman said.

The fire damage was contained to the occupant's apartment, with nine apartments receiving water damage and the hallway receiving minor smoke damage.

No injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $15,000, Hartman said.
