Richardson to be honored for N.M. death penalty ban

SANTA FE, N.M. — Gov. Bill Richardson will travel to Hollywood to accept an award for signing legislation to end the death penalty in New Mexico.

Death Penalty Focus, a nonprofit group in San Francisco, will honor the governor and others at a dinner Thursday night at the Globe Theatre at Universal Studios.

Richardson signed a measure earlier this year to abolish the death penalty for crimes committed after July 1. New Mexico became the second state to ban executions since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976. New Jersey was the first, in 2007.

The governor's office confirmed Wednesday that Richardson will attend the awards dinner. Others being honored include former California Attorney General John Van de Kamp.
