Umpire could be Missouri's first swine flu fatality

BRIDGETON — The 44-year-old St. Louis County man who died after contracting swine flu worked as an umpire, but authorities don't believe he spread the disease to anyone.

The death last week has not been officially blamed on swine flu, pending confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It would be the first swine flu death in Missouri.

The man was an umpire for the adult softball leagues at the Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex.

Work crews cleaned the facility's metal surfaces, bleachers and counters with antiseptic and bleach. But athletic supervisor John Bell told the Suburban Journals that the man had not worked games for a couple of weeks. And the CDC says anyone exposed by the man would have shown symptoms by now.
