This letter is in regards to the dispute of President Obama speaking at Notre Dame. I admire the pro-life people who opposed this. However, I feel they are not looking at the whole pro-life issue, by largely working for a law outlawing abortion on demand. There are many other issues to consider.
Candidates might say they are pro-life, yet they are for capital punishment and weak on abortion alternatives such as a decent wage for women, paid maternity leaves and social programs that include health care for her and her baby. We must also consider if a candidate would rush into war as Bush did or use diplomacy instead, and war only as a last resort. A woman is less likely to want to bring a baby into a world full of war and violence.
Also, the candidate must work for the protection of our environment and food supply, which is necessary for all life. Many Republicans say they are pro-life, but are more interested in promoting big business than other items that protect life.
The best way to protect life and stop abortions is to put morality back in our homes and schools. With both parents in many homes working, they have little time for moral training of their children. Therefore, we need a school voucher system that would allow the parents to send their children to a school that could reinforce their moral views. This would help not only to stop abortions but school bullying and school violence, as well as other violence and crime.
Is it a democracy or fair for only the wealthy to be able to send a child to a school of their choice?
Are the teachers’ unions afraid of competition?
