OXFORD, Miss. — The No. 1 seed Ole Miss Rebels beat the No. 4 seed Monmouth Hawks 8-1 at Oxford-University Stadium in the first round of the NCAA Oxford regional on Friday night.
No. 2 Missouri will play Monmouth at 1 p.m. Saturday in the losers bracket. The loser of the game will be eliminated from the tournament. The winner will play in another elimination game on Sunday.
Ole Miss(41-17) jumped on the underdog Hawks(32-24) in the first inning scoring three runs thanks to three extra base hits.
Rebel pitcher Drew Pomeranz pitched eight shut out innings. Pomeranz struck out 10 Hawks in the process. He allowed only five hits and worked out of several jam in the late innings while his bullpen warmed up behind him.
Outfielder Jordan Henry went three-for-three with two runs scored and an RBI.
Ole Miss will play Western Kentucky in the winners bracket at 5 p.m. Saturday.
