COLUMBIA — Two people arrested Wednesday in connection with a robbery were released, Sgt. Ken Hammond of the Columbia Police Department said Friday.

According to the original report of the incident, a woman told police that she was robbed at gunpoint by a man and woman in the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn, 201 E. Texas Ave. Police arrived and arrested two suspects.

Upon further investigation, police released the two suspects. Hammond said what the woman who reported the incident thought was a robbery and the criteria for robbery did not match. He would not elaborate.

“There was not probable cause to make an arrest,” Hammond said. “The elements of a robbery were not present.”

Hammond also said a handgun wasn't recovered.
