JEFFERSON CITY — A Missouri man convicted of killing his mother during the 1993 flooding in the Midwest is seeking DNA testing of evidence.
Dale Helmig was convicted in 1996 and later sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing his mother, Norma. Her body was found tied to a concrete block in the Osage River near her home in the central Missouri town of Linn.
A petition filed with the Missouri Supreme Court on Wednesday seeks an order allowing the defense to test hair and blood found on the mother's bed sheet and hairs found in the trunk of her car. Such tests were not available at the time of Dale Helmig's trial.
Helmig is in prison in Cameron.
