Alternate transportion: What's missing from the mix?

With bus ridership numbers up and the city promoting bicycling with commercials and classes, it seems more Columbia residents are looking to greener alternatives when traveling in the city.

Yet, despite the number of people using these methods, there is still room for improvement.

Residents such as Jim Cook ride Columbia's buses for their convenience; he finds them to be a fair price, despite fares doubling last October. But he also mentioned the problem with routes not running on Sundays or holidays.

Transportation supervisor Drew Brooks said despite the increased revenue from fare raises, there isn't enough money to provide additional amenities for riders.

And even though GetAbout Columbia is spending more than $1 million on advertising, only 594 adults have attended 70 biking classes, which only averages about 8 adults per class.
