COLUMBIA — A free rain garden community workshop will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Jefferson Farms and Gardens east of Columbia.
The workshop will be held at 4800 E. New Haven Road. Members of the community can participate and the workshop will include a presentation on creating rain gardens to reduce storm water runoff, according to a news release from the Missouri River Communities Network.
Participants will help plant a new community rain garden site. There will also be a question-and-answer session.
The event kicks off the Columbia/Boone County Rain Garden program sponsored by the Missouri River Communities Network. The program is funded by a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
Rain gardens capture rainwater from roadways and parking lots. The gardens help control storm water runoff from traveling to streams, where it carries sediment and other pollutants.
