PrintCOLUMBIA — The City Council will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. in the Daniel Boone City Building to hear public feedback about the formation of a Citizens Police Review Board.
Toni Messina, city spokeswoman, said the city doesn't have an estimate of how many Columbia residents will attend the meeting, but Mayor Darwin Hindman said he suspects there will be a substantial amount of public comments.
"We want to allow as much input as people want to bring," Hindman said.
In addition to public comments, formal presentations will be made at the meeting.
Representatives from the Citizens Oversight Committee, the group appointed by Hindman to look into the issue, have made a report about the creation of a Citizens Police Review Board.
Paula Hertwig-Hopkins, assistant city manager, will make a presentation to the council, as will representatives from the Columbia Police Officers Association.
Messina said she wouldn't be surprised if police officers from the Columbia Police Department attended the meeting, but said they are not scheduled to make a formal presentation.
After hearing the presentations, the council will have the option to vote on creating a Citizens Police Review Board. Hindman said he expects the council will pass some sort of civilian police review board but doesn't know if it will be exactly what the Citizens Oversight Committee recommended.
"I have felt for years we need a civilian review board," Hindman said.
